Teachers Dream

Dream Proposal

Visit to the Zoo

Hello. My name is Mrs Maluleke and I'm a teacher at Leubaneng Primary School (Limpopo) where I teach grades 3. My dream is called "Visit to the Zoo" and is geared towards the following learning areas: Languages, Mathematics.

"To realise my dream I need to raise R5386.50 which will benefit 55 learners. That works out to R98 per learner. Thanks to everyone involved: this dream is completely funded."

The reason I wanted to take my learners to the Zoo is that they never been to one and this will be a good way for them to learn how to count. Being in the Zoo will also teach them about the different kinds of animals that we have. Some of them don’t even know how a lion looks like and we have it as one of the Big 5’s.

One of the representatives in the Zoo will be able to take the learners and explain to them in more detail what they do. I am going to take this opportunity and teach my learners Maths, as they are in Grade 3 they need to count and counting with something that they can see. They will be able to count the legs of the different animals and multiply, times, divide and subtract. This will be very exciting for them.

When we get back to class we are going to be doing a lesson on Reading, making the different sound that the animals were making, the different colors. Try and get the learners to tell the class what they saw and their experience in the Zoo.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Area: Maths Numeracy

Learning Outcomes 1: Number Operations and relationship - Learners are asked to count the parts of the animals bodies they see e.g A lion had four legs 2 eyes etc. They will also count back 4,3,2,1 etc. The same will be done with other animals. They will be asked to give the number of animals they have seen e.g 4 lions, 8 monkeys etc.

  • Learners are asked to calculate the body parts of each animal e.g 4 elephants have got 16 feet.
  • Count the eyes of eight zebras
  • How many ears do five giraffes have
  • Divide the number of the ears of the three monkeys by 2 6÷2=3
  • If the number of jackals in this Zoo are 14 and 9 of them die, how many jackals will be left 14-9=5

The learners will be asked to double and halve number of animals and their parts eg. Double two lions =4 and ½ of 4 =2

Learning Outcome 2: Patterns functions & Algebra - Learners will be asked to describe the patterns they observed from different animals’ e.g The Zebra has got black and white stripes. A leopard has sported colors.

Learning Outcome 4: Measurement - The learners will be asked to compare the length of animals and the mass e.g the giraffe is the tallest and of all the animals. The hippo is the heaviest of all the animals. The elephant is the biggest of all the animals.

Learning Area: Literacy

Learning Outcome 1: Listening
The learners will be listening to a presentation that will be given by the guide in the Zoo.

Learning Outcome 2, 3: Speaking, Reading and Viewing
They will be given the opportunity to ask questions and come up with their own answers.

Learning Outcome 5: Thinking and Reasoning
The learner will be able to use language to think and reason like why is this the way it is.
